Rug care
A good rug lasts for years with a few simple habits.
Every rug
- Use a rug underlay. It stops slipping and protects the floor and the rug.
- Blot spills straight away with a clean cloth. Do not rub.
- Rotate the rug a few times a year so wear and sun fade are even.
Wool
- Vacuum regularly without the beater bar, in the direction of the pile.
- New wool sheds loose fibre for the first few weeks. This is normal.
- Spot clean with cool water and a little wool-safe detergent. For a deep clean, use a professional rug cleaner.
- Do not machine wash wool rugs.
Jute
- Vacuum gently. Jute is a natural fibre and can shed at first.
- Keep jute dry. Water can leave marks, so blot spills at once and let the spot air dry.
- Not for bathrooms or outdoors.
Washable rugs
- Washable rugs up to 160 x 230 cm fit a 9 kg front-loader. Larger sizes are too bulky for most home machines; use a large laundromat machine, or spot clean.
- Wash on a gentle cold cycle with mild detergent. No fabric softener, bleach or tumble dryer.
- Dry flat or hung, out of direct sun.
Outdoor rugs
Sweep or hose down, then dry in the shade. Bring rugs in or lift them during long wet spells to avoid mildew.
